Ungana Kuwasha:
St Pius X College Lenten Appeal

Ungana Kuwasha – uniting to ignite young futures

Ungana Kuwasha is St Pius X College Chatswood’s Lenten Fundraising Initiative, dedicated to supporting Mannya Parish in Uganda. Rooted in the Lenten call to compassion, sacrifice, and service, this initiative invites our community to come together in solidarity, supporting education, sustainable livelihoods, and dignity-centred development through parish-led initiatives such as the Sustainable Coffee Program and St Joseph’s Kensekka.

The "Why": Fundraising and Advocacy

Ungana Kuwasha is grounded in the Edmund Rice Tradition, which calls us to stand with those on the margins and work for justice through presence, partnership, and hope.

In Mannya Parish, Uganda, families face ongoing economic vulnerability and limited access to stable employment and education. The Parish’s Sustainable Coffee Program responds not with short-term aid, but with a commitment to dignity, formation, and self-reliance. By providing coffee seedlings, employment, and skills training, the program empowers parishioners to build sustainable livelihoods and support their families into the future.

Funds raised through Ungana Kuwasha help sustain this life-giving work and support St Joseph’s Kensekka, the local Parish high school, ensuring young people can access education that opens pathways beyond poverty.

Fundraising and advocacy go hand in hand. By learning about Mannya Parish and sharing its story, we are invited — in the spirit of Edmund Rice — to respond with compassion that leads to action, and to help light the way towards lasting change.

Why it Matters:

Ungana Kuwasha is a Lenten appeal rooted in Catholic Social Teaching and the Edmund Rice Tradition.

During Lent, we are called to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that leads to real and lasting change.

By supporting education at St Joseph’s Kensekka and the Parish’s Sustainable Coffee Program, this appeal upholds human dignity, practises solidarity, and supports community-led solutions for those most in need.

As Scripture reminds us, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).

This is almsgiving that builds hope, dignity, and sustainable futures.
